About National Wilderness Month
September is National Wilderness Month. This month celebrates “wilderness” or land untampered and inhibited by humanity, where nature takes its course. According to the US Department of the Interior, “There are more than 680 wilderness areas -- protecting over 106 million acres in 44 states.” While National Wilderness Month might be a US holiday, many countries proactively protect wilderness areas and promote conservation. And we’re all for that!
Enjoying the Great Outdoors: Eco-Friendly Camping Tips
One of the best things about a camping trip is feeling like you’re alone with nature, you’re exploring the unexplored. Keep the wilderness just that by following a few simple eco-friendly tips for minimizing the impact of your next camping adventure on the environment around you:
- Reuse an existing campsite or choose a clearing where you do not have to remove anything from the natural environment.
- Pack out everything you brought with you and only leave compostable materials behind. Pro Tip: by mainly packing biodegradable supplies you’ll run less of a risk of leaving trash behind you.
- Avoid using bodies of water for your dishwashing or bathing needs, any chemicals or additives can contaminate the water.
Want to go above-and-beyond? You can even volunteer on your next trip to help preserve the wilderness. Or explore all seven “Leave No Trace” Principles", best summarized by our partner REI in their article:
- Plan ahead and prepare
- Travel and camp on durable surfaces
- Dispose of waste properly
- Leave what you find
- Minimize campfire impacts (be careful with fire)
