The Truth About Plastic

The Truth About Plastic

More on Plastic.

Did you know that by 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans. Startling, isn't it? But it's true.

According to World Economic Forum, we’re putting so much of the cheap, non-biodegradable packaging material into the ocean that by 2050, ocean plastic will literally outweigh ocean fish.   (see the report here- PDF).

Worldwide plastic production is expected to double within the next 20 years.

More than half of the plastic comes from these five countries. Want to guess which 5 countries are the worst culprits?

Most of the problem lies in packaging. The explosion of plastic took place in the mid-century. Then, the future was plastics, as Benjamin Braddock was told to consider the future of plastics in the 1967 standout film, 'The Graduate.' (video).

With a more recent take on it, Jeff Bridges narrates an exceptionally well told story about the trouble with plastic on behalf of Plastic Pollution Coalition. PPC leads individuals and organizations to take action and pledge to stand against plastic pollution.

At bambu we have designed and developed a product range that provides people with alternatives to plastic in their home, on their table or on the go. We use fast-growing, abundant, eco-friendly bamboo. Locally sourced renewable cork, hemp and organic cotton. In fact, bambu is the only brand offering certified organic bamboo in the home. Made safe from nature.

Packaging is the worse culprit. Here we have taken steps to eliminate plastic entirely from our packaging. (We have several examples including our bread tie story). Look for products and support companies that use minimal or no plastic packaging.
