bambu Wins Housewares Design Finalist Award - 2017

Here at bambu, we're starting the new year right! We have earned the Housewares Design Finalist Award for our acclaimed Reclaimed Cedar Serving collection.

Four months ago, bambu took home top honors with the Best New Product award in New York for this unique range of serving trays and serving boards made from upcycled cedar wood. The first of its kind.

[ This isn't the first time bambu has been recognized with a housewares design award. The company took top honors in 2008 winning the category with our baby utensils made from nature. ]

Cedar Serving Trays and Boards

The upcycled cedar wood is sourced sustainably and a first-of-its-kind collection of serving trays, serving boards and drinks coasters.

The cedar wood is reclaimed from 70-year homes in China. Before western building materials were introduced in China in the mid-century, people used the local wood, naturally. Chinese Cedar wood was a common material for the building of homes and other wooden structures. The wood is salvaged, and used most often by local people for small projects.

“We spotted this salvage yard near our two workshops far south of Shanghai. It was filled with these beautiful cedar planks. We later tested the wood to make sure it was free of chemicals. Not only that, cedar is naturally resistant to staining, bugs and mold. It was our ‘ah ha’ moment,” remarked Rachel Speth, designer and owner of bambu.

The collection consists of eight (8) serving trays and boards handmade from selected wood. The unique grain of the wooden trays makes each product a one-of-a-kind. The design is inspired by the hexagon, a design reference to the company’s on-going support of honeybees and healthy eco-systems.

The awards gala is concurrent with the Las Vegas Market the last week of January 22-26th where bambu will unveil its new showroom on the 11th floor in Building C. bambu will be introducing nearly a dozen new products featured in the company's new 2017 catalog.
